The Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam (MPABD) was established on 28th September 2017, with the merging of Marine Department and Ports Department to form the MPA. MPA Order stipulates that the functions of MPA include licensing and regulatory functions in respect of merchant shipping and particularly in respect of safety at sea, the manning of vessels and the prevention of pollution at sea within ports areas and territorial waters of Brunei Darussalam. MPA also functions to promote efficiency and the development of the port as well as to regulate and control navigation within the limit of the port and approaches to the port. To ensure the orderly operations and development of the maritime sector and industries, MPA will also exercise licensing and regulatory functions in respect of marine and port services and facilities

MPA Board is the Executive body of MPA comprising of 7 members including the Permanent Secretary of ministry of Communication as the Chairman. The BOD shall be responsible for the formulation of the policies of the Authority, the supervision of the implementation and the affairs and the business of the Authority.

The Authority also acts internationally as the national body representative of Brunei Darussalam in respect of sea transport, marine and port matters such as IMO and ASEAN. Brunei Darussalam had joined and become IMO members since 1984 an important platform to promote Brunei Darussalam interest in Maritime.
